Issues
Jobs
I am running to to help make this area a place where there is economic opportunity for all citizens. This is no small feat and one that will take some long-term vision. Economic development has to be a priority. This includes a relationship with the federal representation, access to trainings, and grants. Most importantly, our industries and small businesses need a representative that will listen to the needs of area employers and workers and then go down to Madison and fight for those needs. We need a seat at the table that we don't have now. No one will work harder to bring family-sustaining jobs to this area. No one.
Family Farming and Local Business
I am passionate about fighting for family farms and the rural communities they help support. The direction of agriculture coming from Madison is screaming, “get big or get out,” and pushing around the small guy. This is similar for other rural industries. Too often, state agencies like the DNR have misplaced priorities. The legislation coming from Madison has a lot to do with how we value small business and family farms. I support ways for farms to diversify and direct market more efficiently. I will work to restore more local control over our land and resources. I oppose legislation that favors corporate-sized farms and provide benefits not attainable by the smaller scale farms that laid the bedrock for our rural communities.
Focus on Rural Education Needs
Schools and children are critical to the economic and social success of our area, but the state funding formula is failing. With the combination of declining enrollments and lower incomes yet property-rich areas, the Northwoods faces major funding problems for the future. Voucher programs continue to take tax-payer money out of public education - away from where it is needed most. Instead of a “going-out-of” business model for schools, we need to rework the formula so taxes are applied fairly and rural districts have the transportation and program resources needed for a quality education.
Protecting Our Land and Water
We are fortunate to have beautiful lakes, streams, hills, and trails in our area. The stewardship of our land and water is crucial, not only for our safe consumption, but for important Wisconsin traditions like hunting and fishing. Our groundwater is under attack. I will work to conserve our precious resources. That means being able to make the tough choices on our pending water problems. That means striking a much needed balance between conservation and industry growth. And that means generations to come will have safe water, huntable land, and clean air.
Fiscal Responsibility
Growing up on the farm, we worked for every allowance. We were taught day in and day out to understand the value of a dollar, and I’ll carry those lessons with me to Madison as your district representative. Like you, I am a taxpayer and want to see our tax dollars used prudently and for the common good. We need to get every nickel out of every dollar in the state budget. We can have a government that is leaner, and not meaner.
